故事发生在唐代宗年间。在民间行侠仗义的皇子纳兰东（林峯 饰）邂逅才子李益（程诚 饰）和歌女小玉（叶璇 饰），三人结为知已。初识小玉纳兰东既被其才貌所迷，无奈李益与小玉相好，他不便横刀夺爱。太尉（周绍栋 饰）的千金卢靜澜（陈怡蓉 饰）钟情纳兰东，但纳兰东却对她无甚好感。太子李适遭父皇猜疑，他怕储位被簒，勾结太尉处处制肘纳兰东。朝廷有意安排长安舞乐坊“花魁赛”，比赛中大做手脚，小玉花魁易主，被迫陪嫁公主（苑琼丹 饰）和亲突厥，所佩紫钗成了她郡主身世的证据。皇榜及第的李益欲和小玉再续前缘，不料却遭太尉百般阻挠，纳兰东出以援手相助，而自已则从此隐入红尘，不知所踪......。寅次郎因为妹妹樱子生了小孩，又回到老家柴又，并重遇20年前在商业学校时教他英文的老师坪内。寅次郎造访坪内家，表面上是与老师话旧，实际上却是为了长得慧质兰心的师妹夏子。丰富的接风宴害得惯食清淡的寅次郎腹绞痛。夏子送他入医院，寅次郎病才好一点便与其他病人开赌局，最后还被抓进警局。寅次郎得知素未谋面的亲生母亲原来仍在京都，遂展开一段寻亲之旅，孰料见到后者时，却发现她原来经营一家色情旅馆。寅次郎回到柴又，没想却赶上了坪内的丧礼。打击接二连三降临在他身上：夏子将要下嫁年轻医生藤村。肝肠寸断的寅次郎只好默默踏上旅途。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
