超级肥皂一洗就白人们争购，后来所有的人都变成白衣人，这时卖肥皂的人又改颜料了。。基于各种原因，自幕府末期至昭和初期，日本大批穷苦人家的女孩被贩卖到南洋当妓女，世称“南洋姐”。她们的命运坎坷，受尽人世间的屈辱。有些人客死他乡，有些即使回到故乡，却仍要承受世俗鄙夷的目光。
女性史学家三谷圭子（栗原小卷 饰）为了调查和解开这段历史，走访了九州天草的崎津町 ，不过她的采访并不顺利，曾经历那个年代的老人们对此皆闭口不谈，讳莫如深。偶然间，她在路边冷饮店邂逅曾当过南洋姐的阿崎婆（田中绢代 饰），经过一段时间的试探和交往，原本紧锁心门的老婆婆终于向圭子敞开心扉，一同回首那段不堪回首的悲伤往事……
